Internet Security Systems Enhances Server Protection for Linux Platform

Internet Security Systems, Inc. announced Linux support for its Proventia Server Intrusion Prevention System product line. According to the company, key features of Proventia Server for Linux include vulnerability-based intrusion prevention, Buffer Overflow Exploit Prevention (BOEP), and support for Red Hat Enterprise Linux and SUSE Linux Enterprise Servers. Proventia Server for Linux is constantly updated with vulnerability discoveries and can automatically patch and protect critical servers until organizations are able to obtain and apply patches from affected vendors. Also key to ISS server protection strategy is the companyÕs BOEP technology, which protects hosts from attackers and worms that attempt to use known or previously unknown buffer overflow attacks to exploit the system or propagate.

Parallels Workstation 2.1 Delivers Virtualization Solution for Intel-powered Apple Computers

Parallels announced that it is beginning beta testing for Parallels Workstation 2.1 for Mac OS X, the first virtualization software that gives Apple users the ability to simultaneously run Windows, Linux, or any other operating system and their applications alongside Mac OS X on an Intel-powered Apple computer. According to the company, virtualization software enables users to run multiple operating systems, like Linux or Windows, in isolated Òvirtual machinesÓ directly on a Mac OS X desktop, giving users the ability to run programs that are only available on those operating systems, without having to give up the usability and functionality of their Mac OS X machine. Each virtual machine operates like a stand-alone computer and contains its virtual hardware, including RAM, hard disk, processor, I/O ports, and CD/DVD-drives.

Buffalo Technology Expands Line of TeraStation Terabyte Network Storage Devices

Buffalo Technology announced it is expanding its line of Network Attached Storage (NAS) devices with a 2-TB version of its TeraStation Terabyte Network Storage devices. According to the company, the TeraStation Home Server will now be available in capacities of 1.6 TB (HS-D1.6GL/R5) and 2 TB (HS-D2.0GL/R5). BuffaloÕs new TeraStation Pro will also offer 2 TB of storage (TS-2.0TGL/R5).

The new consumer-targeted TeraStation Home Server includes media server software from Mediabolic, which allows users to manage and distribute digital content to multiple PCs or network entertainment devices on the home network. It includes four USB 2.0 ports, a built-in USB print server, and a file server.

The TeraStation Pro now features Active Directory member support, allowing the product to be deployed in larger companies that utilize Active Directory Domain environments. It also features two USB 2.0 ports, four serial ATA hard drives, and a lockable front panel. It also includes an LCD monitor, which indicates operational mode, disk usage, network information, or whether there are any problems with the device.

Scalix Announces New Versions of Its Email and Calendaring System on Linux

Scalix announced three new products: Scalix Small Business Edition, the Scalix Appliance, and Scalix Community Edition Raw. According to the company, Scalix Small Business Edition offers many of the same features of ScalixÕs Enterprise Edition, but at a price point more appropriate for small organizations. It includes third-party support for MS Outlook and Scalix Web Access (SWA), the companyÕs AJAX Web email client. It also includes native support for Novell Evolution, unlimited POP/IMAP email access, GUI and command-line administration, full group calendaring and scheduling, and the optional Scalix Wireless Solution. Pricing starts at $995 for 50 users.

The company says the Scalix Appliance is a secure email and collaboration solution with rich email client support and integrated anti-spam and anti-virus protection. Community Edition Raw is free software that enables Linux systems administrators, developers, and enthusiasts to customize an open email server that supports rich email clients. Functionally equivalent to Community Edition, CE Raw components are individually available, making customization easier. The software includes manual installation instructions via a Wiki that community members can use to share technical tips and how-to information.
