FreeBSD Project Releases FreeBSD 6.0

The FreeBSD Project released FreeBSD 6.0, an open source operating system derived from BSD UNIX. According to the announcement, FreeBSD 6.0 helps organizations utilize open source technologies that focus on reliability, security, and scalability.

A new feature in FreeBSD 6.0 is a multithreaded file system that improves data access times for local disks, RAID configurations, network file systems, and SANs. FreeBSD 6.0 also extends support for wireless devices and adds supports for the WPA wireless security protocol. FreeBSD also scales more efficiently across multiple processor systems.

Levanta Releases MapFS Code

Levanta recently released its MapFS code to the open source community. According to the company, MapFS is a virtual file system that simplifies data sharing between multiple Linux machines connected to a shared storage medium (SAN/NAS/Mainframe DASD). As a Linux kernel-loadable module, MapFS has been developed under the GPL but is now being available on SourceForge (http://sourceforge.net/projects/mapfs) and on Levanta’s Web site (http://www.levanta.com/mapfs/).

Linux systems with MapFS can provide sharing of read-only file systems while also allowing clients of the read-only file system to write to their own data stores. Files can be on a read-only persistent repository file system or on a writable persistent overlay file system.

Data Protection Solutions Introduces EzBackup-sa

Data Protection Solutions (DPS), a provider of disk-to-disk (D2D) mirroring, backup, and restore solutions, released a Linux version of EzBackup-sa. According to the company, EzBackup-sa, a USB-based, standalone full image backup and restore solution, provides Linux users complete system and data recovery designed for their environment. Using EzBackup-sa, small offices and single server or computer environments can quickly restore everything (including the Linux operating system, preferences, settings, applications, and data). The EzBackup-sa software provides three routines: backup, restore, and schedule (for timed backups).

Oracle Unveils Free Database

Oracle announced Oracle Database 10g Express Edition (Oracle Database XE), a free, starter edition of the database software. According to the company, a beta version of Oracle Database XE is available for download at http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/ \

This new edition of Oracle Database 10g offers application developers, database administrators (DBAs), and students a free starter database to develop and deploy their applications. It is also freely available for independent software vendors and hardware vendors to distribute or embed with their applications and products.

Oracle Database XE is built on the Oracle Database 10g Release 2 code base and is fully compatible with the family of Oracle Database products including Oracle Standard Edition One, Oracle Standard Edition, and Oracle Enterprise Edition. Users can start small, choose to upgrade to other editions of Oracle Database 10g as demand grows, and move their applications to other editions without changes.

Oracle Database XE delivers the same common SQL and PL/SQL interfaces available in other versions of Oracle Database 10g, plus a wide range of programming interfaces to support the needs of different development communities. Oracle Database XE enables developers to take advantage of Oracle HTML DB feature for Web application development and deployment. Oracle Database XE is available on 32-bit Linux and Windows operating systems, and can be installed on any supported hardware platform.

Applicure Technologies unveiled TotalShield 2.0, a security solution to provide end-to-end protection for the corporate Web environment. According to the company, TotalShield employs system-level protection to enforce access policies for different users. Symark Introduces PowerBroker 4.0

Symark released PowerBroker 4.0, which introduces the ability to deploy command shells for extended control and logging. According to the company, a GUI report writer has been added. PowerBroker provides Unix and Linux systems security and accountability by enabling systems administrators to manage requests and delegate administrative task privileges and authorization without disclosing the “superuser” or root password. It also enables systems administrators to grant selective access to Unix and Linux-based corporate resources.
