Intuitive Edge Launches Datatypes++ 1.0

Intuitive Edge Corporation has released Datatypes++ 1.0, a Windows class library that brings datatypes to C++. Datatypes++ 1.0 offers 25 text, numeric, time, and binary datatypes similar to those found in Java, SQL, Visual Basic, ODBC, Delphi, MFC, and C++ STL.

The text types can be converted to and from all other types in dozens of dialects and include Unicode support. The numeric types include a decimal type that can represent fixed or dynamic high-precision numbers. The time types (time, date, and timestamp) can represent time in 100 world clocks with nanosecond precision. The binary datatypes include support for binary large objects and bit sets.

Datatypes++ 1.0 costs $298 for an individual license and includes support for Microsoft and Borland C++ compilers.

Inprise/Borland Ships Borland C++Builder 5

Inprise/Borland has announced C++Builder 5, an updated version of its ANSI C++ visual development system for Windows 95/98/NT/2000. Available in standard, professional, and enterprise editions, C++Builder 5 simplifies the development of Internet, desktop, client/server, and distributed applications.

C++Builder 5 Standard Edition costs $99.95, the Professional Edition costs $799, and the Enterprise Edition costs $2,499. Current owners of any Borland Professional product can purchase C++Builder 5 Enterprise for $2,199, and current owners of other Borland development tools can purchase the Professional edition for $249.95. Current owners of competing products can purchase the Professional edition for $299.95.

Genitor Unveils Genitor Surveyor v4.5

Genitor Corporation has announced Surveyor v4.5, a product that tracks rapidly changing or new code by automatically creating web-based documentation. Surveyor v4.5 organizes and charts relationships between objects and gives programmers a way to navigate through projects using a browser. Improvements in Surveyor v4.5 include one-click web generation, a batch interface, and tight integration with Visual Studio. Surveyor v4.5 also supports Javadoc compatibility that allows the use of Java tags (that facilitate extracting documentation directly from Java source code) within C/C++ code.

Analog Devices Announces VisualDSP with C++

Analog Devices, Inc. has announced the addition of C++ support to VisualDSP, its IDE for programming DSP systems. Analog Devices' C++ feature provides complex and fractional types and supports object-oriented programming for user-defined types that are more general and flexible than programming techniques that use only data abstraction. Generic programming is achieved by using templates that allow algorithms to be expressed independently of representation details.

VisualDSP with C++ for the SHARC DSP family costs $2,995. The complete package for the TigerSHARC DSP family costs $3,500. The cost for a complete package for the ADSP-218x or ADSP-219x DSP family costs $2,995.

Intel Introduces VTune Performance Analyzer v4.5, Intel C/C++ Compiler v4.5, and Intel Fortran Compiler v4.5

Intel Corporation has released VTune Performance Analyzer v4.5, Intel C/C++ Compiler v4.5, and Intel Fortran Compiler v4.5, software development tools for the latest Intel CPUs. The VTune Performance Analyzer v4.5 helps programmers find and fix application bottlenecks that may limit performance. It can profile both JIT-compiled code and native Windows applications. Profiling is done using non-intrusive sampling techniques that monitor all resources being used on the system.

The C/C++ Compiler v4.5 and the Fortran Compiler v4.5 offer performance improvements for Intel Architecture applications, using highly optimized techniques such as interprocedural optimization, vectorization, and profile-guided optimization. These compilers also feature intrinsics and class libraries that support the Intel processor instructions, eliminating the need to program directly in assembly language.

The VTune Performance Analyzer v4.5 costs $429, the C/C++ Compiler v4.5 costs $299, and the Fortran Compiler v4.5 costs $349.

VMware Announces VMware 2.0 for Linux

VMware, Inc. has announced VMware 2.0 for Linux. VMware 2.0 for Linux allows users to run multiple operating systems simultaneously on a single PC. Version 2.0 introduces features and enhancements, such as a suspend-to-disk and instant restore function, performance improvements, support for SCSI disks and CD-ROM devices, and automatic Samba file sharing for Windows on Linux.

VMware 2.0 for Linux may be downloaded at the company's website for $299; the discounted student/hobbyist download version costs $99. VMware 2.0 for Linux is available on disk for $329 plus shipping and handling; the discounted student/hobbyist disk version cost $129.

Data Techniques Unveils ImageIt

Data Techniques, Inc. has released ImageIt, its printer driver that allows Windows applications to create industry standard TIFF, PCX, DCX, BMP, and PNG raster image files by printing. ImageIt supports 300 and 600 dpi resolution; letter, legal, and A4 paper sizes in both portrait and landscape orientations; TIFF compression methods including Group 3, Group 4, Huffman, and Packbits; and automatic serialization of multi-page documents into separate image files if the image file format does not support multiple pages.

Datalight Launches Sockets v2.0 and Software Evaluation Kit

Datalight Inc. has released Sockets v2.0, a suite of tools that equip embedded devices with Internet access. Sockets v2.0 includes a compact TCP/IP stack and the following applications: an FTP server and client, an HTTP server and client, email, terminal emulation, and printing.

Datalight also has released an SEK (Software Evaluation Kit) for the ST Microelectronics STPC series of development boards. The Datalight SEK includes a suite of software optimized for use on the new embedded platform. The SEK offers ROM-DOS, a fully compatible, compact DOS for embedded environments; SuperBoot, a utility of ROM-DOS that is useful for system diagnosis and emergency recovery; and WinLight, a compact GUI for embedded systems. Datalight SEK provides a free evaluation platform that requires almost no configuration time on STPC.

Interactive Network Technologies Offers J/Carnac 1.0

Interactive Network Technologies, Inc. has announced J/Carnac 1.0, its graphics toolkit used to develop graphical applications such as scientific graphs and diagrams, maps, and real-time charts. Based on pure Java 2D, J/Carnac 1.0 insures cross-platform compatibility. The bytecode development license for J/Carnac 1.0 is free, and there is no runtime fee for embedding J/Carnac 1.0 inside applications or applets.

In addition, Interactive Network Technologies offers training and consulting services and a maintenance contract for J/Carnac 1.0. The maintenance contract includes full technical support and early access to bug fixes and new releases. Also, the source code will be licensed for customer convenience.

Tek-Tools, Inc. has released KAWA 4.0 IDE for Java. Green Hills Software and Express Logic Announce Evacuation Kit for pSOS+

Green Hills Software, Inc. has announced the EK (Evacuation Kit) for pSOS+ developed in cooperation with Express Logic. EK offers an option to pSOS+ users faced with Wind River Systems' decision to discontinue pSOS+, telling users to migrate to VxWorks, a much bulkier product that may not work for pSOS+ customers. The EK helps pSOS+ customers who don't want to migrate their applications to VxWorks because of royalty, cost, size, or performance reasons. The EK allows pSOS+ customers to migrate existing applications to Green Hills Software's ThreadX/MULTI2000 IDE.

ThreadX, Evacuation Kit for pSOS+, and MULTI 2000 are fully integrated and available from Green Hills Software. ThreadX is licensed on a product-line basis, including source code and without runtime royalties for a project-wide cost of $9,500. MULTI 2000 pricing starts at $5,900. The Evacuation Kit for pSOS+ is free to licensed ThreadX users.

NCompass Labs has shipped Resolution 3.0, a web content management solution for the Microsoft platform. Resolution 3.0 provides tools for site design and management, content authoring, and publishing. The visual browser-based authoring allows non-technical users to create, manage, publish, and archive content. The open, object-oriented API permits customization. ESRI Unveils NetEngine 1.2

ESRI has shipped NetEngine 1.2, a library designed for geographic network analysis, such as networks defining streets, railways, utility and distribution facilities, or rivers. NetEngine 1.2 provides the capability to define, store, traverse, and analyze many kinds of networks through a C API or through Visual Basic via a type library. In version 1.2, hierarchical shortest-path and origin-destination solvers enhance performance, and support for bitmap and heap data structure allows the implementation of custom network solutions.

NetEngine 1.2 Standard Developer Kit, which includes one developer seat and 10 deployment licenses, costs $12,500. The Internet Developers Kit, which includes one developer seat and one network server deployment license for 12 months for one server, costs $7,500.

Crystal Software Releases TextPipe 4.6

Crystal Software has released TextPipe 4.6, its text transformation workbench. TextPipe 4.6 performs multiple text operations on files up to 2GB in memory and in one pass. XML Software Announces InterAccess v1.1

XML Software Corporation has announced InterAccess v1.1, a product that provides access to any ODBC/OLEDB-compliant SQL database via the Internet. InterAccess v1.1 implements a client/server architecture much like FTP and uses an XML protocol to provide access to SQL databases that have ODBC or OLEDB drivers. It consists of three components: InterAccess Server, the InterAccess client COM DLL, and the InterAccess Browser.

The COM DLL provides COM objects and interfaces ready to drop into Visual Basic, C++, or other RAD tool programs. The COM object model is similar to the Microsoft ADO object model.

PACT Software Unveils PACT 12Ghosts 2030

PACT Software has released 12Ghosts 2030, a package of 18 Windows utilities and backup tools. Included are tools such as an automatic multi-backup system, a one-click shutdown manager, program scheduler, compression, a profile backup tool, Explorer menu extensions, and a desktop time display with world times and alarm.

In this version, 2ndBackup now supports backing up complete folders and subfolders, and using wildcards such as *.doc. The enhancements to ProfileCopy are too numerous to list here. Hewlett-Packard Debuts HP Developer's Garage

Hewlett-Packard Company has announced the debut of Developer's Garage, a multi-platform program that offers tools, partnerships, and services designed to enable deployment of e-service applications. Developer's Garage is an extension of HP's Garage Program and will foster the development of new, multi-platform Internet software tools that allow dot coms, ASPs, Internet start-ups, and trading communities to build, run, finance, and market their businesses.

Developer's Garage offers a development environment designed specifically for e-services, including development tools for Java and C/C++. It also offers a choice of desktops, including Windows NT, Linux, and HP-UX 11. In addition, Developer's Garage provides web-based access to the full set of resources required to design, develop, test, and certify applications on HP-UX 11, Windows NT, and Linux.

Be Incorporated has announced BeOS 5, its digital media operating system. Included with BeOS 5 are a programmers development kit and a library of demonstration applications. BeOS 5 runs on both Intel- and PowerPC-based machines and can handle terabytes of data. The audio and video codecs include support for Cinepak, Indeo 5, raw audio, P-JPEG, and MP3. Twenty-six applications, many of which are multimedia oriented, come bundled with BeOS 5.
